Indoor & Outdoor Additions

Project overview

The clients requested various additions both above and below ground. However, restrictive zoning ordinances challenged the overall allowable building footprint. Working within these confines, spatial masses were first analyzed to determine best fit followed by further development.
Outside the building’s original footprint, basement additions include a wine cellar, a golfing practice room, and a fitness/yoga room. The first two rooms were placed underneath a raised front porch (not shown here) while the fitness room is underneath the 3-season porch and dining deck.
The kitchen expansion, itself, stepped out two feet from where an exterior wall was previously located. By holding ceiling planes back from the new exterior wall location, we captured void spaces. Skylights in the roof and clerestory glazing above the sliding glass door allowed sunlight to flood into the interior spaces—much more than what was originally conceived.
The shed roof of the porch continued to extend over a portion of the raised patio deck while another shed roof steps down to the grill deck. Configuration of spaces and roofs were intentional so that the client—who loved to cook on the grill—even during inclement weather—would have access to it via a sheltered pathway. Separating cooking from dining areas also allowed for more seating.
Another part of the addition was reconfiguring underutilized space. This was done by converting a low-sloping roof into a private rooftop terrace, thus, would allow clients to enjoy the outdoors immediately from their second-floor master bedroom.
Project enhancements were designed under the auspices of previous employer (Bouril Design Studio).
